Training for the trucking and hauling industry can be very complex and involves learning a lot of technical and industry-specific concepts. It can be difficult for workers, specifically newcomers, to grasp this training if they don’t have the underlying language and Skills for Success needed to learn and develop the more advanced skills required to complete tasks safely and effectively.
Skills for Success are nine foundational skills that are used every day and are needed for successful participation at work, in the community, and in life. This model includes skills such as digital use, communication, adaptability, reading, and numeracy. In order to advance in a career and learn complex tasks and processes, workers need to have strong Skills for Success. Developing these skills helps workers thrive in the tasks they are given and makes it easier to succeed in training courses or certification and understand industry training and workplace-specific training.
To support newcomers and workers in the trucking and hauling industry, AWES has developed new language and Skills for Success materials to bridge course content for the Alberta Motor Transport Association’s (AMTA) self-paced, online Aggregate Hauling Equipment Training course. These new materials will mitigate language barriers for English as a Second Language (ESL) workers and make the course more accessible to newcomers and individuals with low-level literacy skills. The content adheres to Alberta legislation, is designed within the context of aggregate hauling, and includes language and skill-building activities, plain-language explanations, authentic industry documents, realistic scenarios, and aggregate hauling tasks.
Workers who take the Aggregate Hauling Equipment Training course will be able to understand and apply technical and safety concepts and will develop the skills they need to work safely and efficiently in the trucking and hauling industry. This includes learning the hazards of the job, strategies for keeping themselves and others safe at work, and how to complete various tasks, such as planning routes, inspecting equipment, and controlling safety concerns. Upon completion of the course, workers will receive a certificate.
