Our board of directors is pleased to introduce Erin Mills as AWES’ new Executive Director. Erin joins AWES following the retirement of former Executive Director, Cindy Messaros who led AWES for 15 years from 2008-2023.
Erin comes to AWES with more than 20 years of experience related to human resource development and research. She has a strong background in the non-profit sector and has led numerous large-scale initiatives on literacy, essential skills, work-integrated learning, workplace training, diversity, equity and inclusion and barriers to labour market access and attachment.

Prior to joining AWES, Erin held progressively senior roles with the Conference Board of Canada as the Director of Human Capital, Workplace Health and Inclusion, as well as with the Mining Industry Human Resources Council as the Director of Labour Market Information and HR Research, and with Seneca College as the Director of Institutional Research. Erin also has substantial experience teaching undergraduate students at several Canadian post-secondary institutions. Erin’s academic background also includes a PhD (abd), MA and BA (Hons) in Sociology, and Diploma in Health Sciences.
The Board is very excited to have Erin join AWES. With her leadership and dedication to improving the literacy and essential skills of Canadians, we are confident in Erin’s ability to expand AWES and we look forward to the future direction and continued growth of our organization.
