In an exciting new initiative for 2024-26, AWES is rolling out a project focused on breaking down barriers to workforce success for newcomers in Alberta. Our latest project, titled Strengthening Industry Capacity to Support Newcomers is funded by the Government of Alberta and involves development and delivery of a series of practical, insightful webinars targeted at trainers, employers, and community stakeholders.
Meeting a Growing Need in Alberta’s Workforce
As Alberta welcomes more newcomers, industries like construction, manufacturing, and hospitality are experiencing an increased need for accessible, effective safety training. Many newcomers face language, skills, and cultural barriers that make it challenging to successfully complete industry-standard safety training.
Webinars for Empowering Trainers and Employers
AWES is developing a series of webinars designed to empower workplace trainers and community organizations in understanding and meeting newcomers’ unique needs. Key topics will include:
- Practical strategies to address language challenges and low skill levels in training environments.
- Essential teaching tips for safety trainers working with diverse groups.
- Effective techniques for clear communication, comprehension checks, and writing content accessible to newcomers and literacy learners.
These webinars will serve as a tool for employers and trainers, ensuring they’re better equipped to help newcomers transition smoothly into Alberta’s workforce.
Long-Term Goals for Newcomer Success
The long-term goal of the project is to create a suite of tools and resources that can be accessed on demand by organizations across Alberta, providing ongoing support for newcomer integration. AWES’s ultimate aim is to ensure that all participants in the workforce—employers, trainers, and newcomers alike—are empowered to succeed together, fostering a stronger, more inclusive Alberta.
