Project Partner(s): Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC), and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT)

Project lead: The Government of New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour

The Newcomer Trades project was a multi-jurisdictional project facilitated in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick. Newcomers interested in careers in the trades received contextualized essential skills training to increase their ability to enter a regular apprenticeship pathway. Participants completed hands-on learning to build language and essential skills, gained experience in multiple trades, and practiced technical applications of learning in carpentry, sheet metal, and plumbing classes at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).

The 11 students in the project graduated from the Intro to Scaffolding program, completed a practical work placement, and earned several safety tickets before challenging the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) exam.
